Dear Oberon Parents,

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! My name is Tara Peña, and I am the the proud principal of Oberon Middle School. I am humbled and excited to be starting my 6th year as the principal at Oberon.  I thought I would share a few things about myself as we begin our school year together.  First things first. I have three great loves in my life. For those of you that already know me, you’re probably thinking I’m going to say my husband and two daughters. Of course they are the TRUE loves of my life; that goes without saying. I have a beautiful and supportive family who has been by my side, cheering me on every step of the way. But, my other great loves- in this order- are Jeffco Public Schools, coffee, and the Denver Broncos. For time’s sake, I’ll just share about my love of Jeffco. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Jeffco. Jeffco has been so good to me: as a student, a parent, and an employee. I’m a proud Jeffco graduate- go Chatfield Chargers! As an Arvada resident, my daughters, Santana and Savanna, attend the dual language program at Foster Elementary in Jeffco. Lastly, I’ve spent that last 16 years of my career teaching, learning, and leading in Jeffco. I couldn’t ask for a better district to work in or a better school community to serve. I am fiercely committed to educational equity.  I believe that all children have the right to feel safe, to be welcomed into our school and classroom communities, and to receive an education that appropriately challenges them as we prepare them for high school and for life. My role as your principal is to help create, implement, and monitor structures and systems that allow our young people to thrive and do their best work. It is a great privilege and responsibility. Thank you for your support and belief in me as the lead learner at Oberon.

As the new school year approaches, I am filled with joy and anticipation as we are busy making preparations for another year of learning and growth at Oberon Middle School. As I reflect about the upcoming year, my greatest hope is that our kids will be excited to come to school each day. Our students will (safely) run through the front door each day because of what awaits them: classes that engage them and challenge them to think critically; classes that require students to be authentic problem-solvers and innovators; and classes that allow students to be creative and analytical all in the same class period. Students will be excited to come to school because they know they will be greeted by adults who really “see” them as the amazing young people they are, and our students will feel valued, respected, and heard by everyone at Oberon. While that may seem like a tall-order, I believe it is possible if we work together as a community of educators and parents in the best interest of our students. We cannot do this important work without you! For most of our students, they will grow more--physically, academically, and socially--during their two years at Oberon than they ever have before. For parents, this is an exciting and scary milestone, and we are here to support you every step of the way! I hope my weekly “Oberon Update” emails, our bi-monthly newsletters, and this quarterly blog will provide you with helpful information with the “need to knows” and will provide positive insight on parenting a middle-schooler with a lot of “nice to knows.”

For this school year, we will continue to focus on the concept of community as we welcome many new staff members, students, and families to Oberon. The first few weeks of school will be devoted to forging strong relationships between educator and student, educator and parents, and student to student. We will work to establish routines, expectations, and a sense of belonging in every Oberon classroom and setting. Our guiding statement: “Oberon Middle School develops a supportive, innovative community of resilient learners” will shape all that we do at Oberon as we work to strengthen citizenship and leadership in every child. Every educator at Oberon will spend time teaching, modeling, practicing and reinforcing our school-wide expectations using both “DO-HOPE” and the Viking PRIDE behavior matrix.  A copy of these will be shared with you as part of our online registration process. Please take time to review these expectations with your child throughout the school year.

All of us at Oberon are very grateful for the strong community support that we benefit from and experience throughout the school year.  Our PTSA is a viable and strong example of community as so many Oberon parents participate in helping our school flourish.  Our PTSA board members will reach out to you often during the school year with opportunities for you to get involved.  Thank you for commitment to Oberon and our students!

A new school year is here, and Oberon cannot wait to welcome your child, to teach your child, and to form a strong and positive relationship with your child.  Thank you for trusting us with your precious child(ren). I look forward to this school year! Should you ever need me, please don’t hesitate to call or email. I can be reached at 303.982.2020 or via email at tara.pena@jeffco.k12.co.us. Happy New Year!

Respectfully,
